Why do so many ideas exist only in theory? We all have passions and ideas. We are all creative in our own way. And we all come up with ideas, all of the time. We just don’t always act on them.  -Greyson MacLean (Inventor of BrickStix age 13)

Many of us have been in a conversation at one point in our lives when someone shares their idea for what they think would make a great invention. I have personally been an enthusiastic ear to a number of these conversations; great ideas that never graduate past the point of group discussion.

So why is that? Why do so many of these ideas exist only in theory?

Guy Kawasaki (Entrepreneur and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures) believes that the reason why more of our dreams don’t come to fruition is because “ideas are easy, implementation is hard.” In other words, talking about inventing something is fun, working towards making that invention a reality…not quite as fun.

And that’s not to say that people who don’t invent things are not hard working. It just means that it takes a different kind of hard work to get a product from the idea stage to the store shelf.

Author and work-life trainer Joe Robinson has compiled a list of The 7 Traits Of Successful Entrepreneurs.  If you have an idea for something that you would like to create then I encourage you to take a look.  Which of these traits do you possess and which ones could use some work?

Team BrickStix never forgets to remind their customers that their product was dreamt up by a kid.  Proof that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, every idea has a chance to succeed.

Never be afraid to try something new.  Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. -Unknown

7 Traits Of Successful Entrepreneurs

  • Tenacity.  Be Persistent!  You have a long road ahead of you and you need to be prepared for a lot of ups and downs.
  • Passion.  If you love what you’re doing it will help push you through the difficult times.
  • Tolerance of ambiguity.  You must be able withstand the fear of potential failure.
  • Vision.  Find a need in the marketplace and fill that need.
  • Self-belief.  You need to be confident that your product is something that the world needs and that you are capable of delivering it.
  • Flexibility.  You must be able to adapt to changing markets and customer needs.  Your product or service may look very different after some time in the marketplace.
  • Rule-breaking.  Entrepreneurs do things their own way.  Figure out what works for you!

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to share my BrickStix journey with about 500 students at Horace Mann Elementary School. For about a week they had been told a special speaker was coming to their school. There were posters up and down the halls with famous inventors on them, and one in shadow. I didn’t know about any of this before my arrival, but, I did think it was pretty cool to be included with such great minds…to be a “real live one!” My purpose was to inspire them to be creative, and to let them know kids can do incredible things. All kids!

I walked in to the filled auditorium with my BrickStix in hand, and the teacher and I did a little skit to get the kids excited. She pretended to not know who I was, and I let her know I was there to speak to the kids. They all laughed. Anyway, I went on to share my story. I had a prepared PowerPoint with images of me as a kid building with LEGO and pictures involving my BrickStix adventure. I showed them bits of video from a couple tv spots and I talked about inventing.

As I stood there, talking, I was struck by their age. I was once that small. Some of them were the age I was when I dreamt up BrickStix. I was no different from any of them, and they were no different from me. I’m no expert, but it was fun pretending to be. We all have passions and ideas. We are all creative in our own way. And we all come up with ideas, all of the time. We just don’t always act on them. I let them know that I think inventing is just solving a problem. Maybe it’s making something that already exists work better, or maybe it is coming up with something completely new. Regardless, we all have it in us. They had lots of questions, and were eager to learn as much as they could.

I hope I inspired them to be creative thinkers and I hope they all enjoy getting ready to present at their Inventors’ Fair. I know they inspired me.

Feeling inspired,

Brick Boy

The leaves are falling, the weather is crisp, and Trick-or-Treating is just around the corner. I am at the beginning of my 8th grade year. My mom is always saying how fast things are moving. I don’t feel quite the same, but it is hard to believe I came up with the idea for BrickStix over 4 years ago. Wow, how things have changed.

We’re all grown up

BrickStix has grown– just like I have. BrickStix has made mistakes– just like I have. BrickStix has changed– just like I have. I’m older, taller, my voice is deeper, and I just may be a bit wiser. One thing I know for sure, is that my journey with BrickStix has been amazing. I have been afforded incredible opportunities. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been worth it. I have learned so much about myself, about others, about the business world, and about life.

It’s not just about an idea

As we head into November and prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I will be reminded of how thankful I am BrickStix is part of my story. Thankful for my family who rallied around my idea, thankful for the men and women who answered all of our questions and helped us bring BrickStix to market, thankful for the independent toy store owners who took a chance on a kid’s idea, thankful for the fans who love my idea and help keep us going, thankful for all my friends and family who have supported me, and thankful my little idea has made it to the shelves of Toys “R” Us. I have learned that it’s not just about an idea, it takes believing and a lot of hard work.

I am a lucky kid. That’s for sure. Thank you to everyone who helped me on my BrickStix journey. Wherever it goes, I am grateful.

With Gratitude,
Brick Boy
